March has finally arrived. Traditionally, this is the biggest gaming release month for a new year. While this year's roster is lacking the punch we remember from the past few years, there are some games that have the potential to be good.
In this feature we'll look at the 12 games coming out in March 2018 that might just be worth your money.
1. Fear Effect Sedna
The long awaited sequel to Fear Effect is almost upon us as Sedna launches on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch on March 6th. Hana, Glas, Rain and Deke are joined by new character Axel as they confront the spirit realm and enter the world of Inuit mythology in a real-time, isometric, tactic heavy action-adventure. We managed to play a small chunk of Fear Effect Sedna at EGX Rezzed last year and we were impressed with what we played and with another year of development under its belt, we’re excited to see the finished product.
2. Warhammer: Vermintide II
Currently enjoying a successful beta, Vermintide II is a co-op centric first-person action game set in the fantasy Warhammer universe. While it’s a sequel, you won’t have had to play the original Vermintide to enjoy this (but you should anyway, Vermintide: The End Times is great). This time around, the Nurgle worshiping Warriors of Chaos have joined forces with the relentless Skaven ratmen to lay siege to the realm of men. It’s your job to kick those rat faced freaks in the ass and send them packing with their long pink tail between their legs. Warhammer: Vermintide II is landing on PC on March 8th, 2018.
3. Sea of Thieves
Get ready to shiver some timbers, plunder some booty and have a Kraken good time when Sea of Thieves releases on 20th March 2018 for Xbox One and PC. If you’ve been marooned on a desert island somewhere and haven’t heard much about Rare’s latest project, it’s a “pirate extravaganza” in which you crew up with friends (or strangers) to sail around the sea, explore islands and do general pirate things (like locking your friends in the brig). Rossko recently got some hands on time with the Beta should you fancy reading more on Sea of Thieves.
4. Q.U.B.E. 2
The original Q.U.B.E. was a bit of a sleeper hit so we’re happy Toxic Games are back with a sequel in the six sided shape of Q.U.B.E. 2. In this first-person puzzle game you play as archaeologist Amelia Cross who awakes on a strange alien world and must manipulate her environment in order to survive and maybe unveil the mysteries surrounding her situation. Q.U.B.E. 2 launches on March 13th for PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4
5. Golem
How to deal with movement has been a continual bane for VR game development. Some games use teleportation, others use hand movement control and neither method feels entirely intuitive – but Golem, from Highwire Games, has introduced something new. Using something called “Incline Control”, you’ll be able to move through Golem by tilting your body as if you’re about to walk in that direction. Word on the grapevine is that this could be revolutionary for VR development and makes exploring the enemy and secret filled Endless City of Golem a breeze. Check out Golem when it launches on PS4/PSVR on March 13th, 2018.
6. Kirby: Star Allies
A new Kirby game is always a cause for celebration and this time, he’s not alone. With up to 4-player co-op, Kirby Star Allies allows the pink puff to hit enemies with hearts to turn them into allies. Nintendo are on a roll right now and Kirby Star Allies might be the next “must have” Switch title when it launches on March 16th, 2018.
7. Attack on Titan 2
I’ll be honest – I never expected Omega Force and Koei Tecmo to be able to replicate the fast paced, high flying, Maneuvering Gear powered combat from the graphic novels/anime series in a convincing way, but they nailed it with the original AOT game. With A.O.T. 2, Omega Force are building upon the many positives of the first game while improving the Titan AI and making the game more of a challenge. A.O.T. 2 is releasing on PC, Switch, PS4, Switch and even the PSVita on March 15th in Japan and 5 days later, on March 20th, for the rest of the world.
8. Assassin's Creed Rogue Remastered
When it first released back in 2014 on PS3 and Xbox 360, Assassin’s Creed Rogue got a bit of a raw deal. It launched in the same window as Assassin’s Creed Unity and received next to no marketing spend when compared to its Parisian counterpart. They say that hindsight is 20/20 and looking back, Ubisoft might count that as a mistake because, as it turns out, AssCreed: Rogue was actually a really great game. Now it’s getting a deserved second bite of the cherry as a remaster, launching on the PS4 and Xbox One on the 10th of March. If you passed up on Rogue in favour of Unity, now is the time to witness the closure of the Kenway saga.
9. Far Cry 5
The Far Cry series has become synonymous with incredible villains we love to hate with such incredible bad guys as Pagan Min, Vaas and, the most deadly of them all, malaria. This seems to be a trend that’ll continue with Far Cry 5 and antagonist Joseph Seed and his Eden’s Gate cultists. Set in Montana, we’ll get to run, gun and drive around Hope County, kicking the cult in the nuts with a little help from our friends and a dog named Boomer. Far Cry 5 is blasting onto PC, PS4 and Xbox One on March 27th.
10. Ni No Kuni 2: Revenant Kingdom
According to the vast majority of early impressions, RPG’s don’t come as charming or as involving as Ni No Kuni II: Revenent Kingdom. Unlike the original Ni No Kuni game, Studio Ghibli haven’t been involved in the creation of Revenent Kingdom but this certainly hasn’t affected how beautiful this game looks. Ni No Kuni II: Revenent Kingdom hits PC and PS4 on March 23rd and if you’re looking for an RPG with a difference, keep an eye on this one.
11. Detective Pikachu
The Pokemon spin-off Detective Pikachu has been available in Japan for more than 2 years but on March 23rd (March 24th in Australia) the rest of the world will get to play it on the 3DS too. The game follows the mystery solving antics of an intelligent Pikachu and a boy named Tim who can understand what the iconic Pokemon is saying. If this wasn’t enough for you, there’s a Detective Pikachu 2DS, 3DS and Amiibo releasing in March too.
12. Burnout Paradise Remastered
Welcome to the jungle. We’ve got fun and games. It’s in your head now, right? Unless you were living under a rock when it was announced last week, Burnout Paradise is getting the remaster treatment for PS4 and Xbox One and it’s crashing in on March 16th (there’s a PC version also on the way later in the year). The Remaster includes 8 DLC packs and the original soundtrack – yes, including Avril Lavigne.
